Ron Huston – Love for Latvia

In 2009, Ron and Cindy Huston were called to a small Latvian town of Talsi through a mission trip with Bear Valley Church, in Lakewood Colorado, USA. From the moment they arrived they felt a calling to help Talsi Baptist Church and the local school.

Because they both had worked in schools and Ron had led technology organizations throughout his career their first project was to provide the school teachers with laptop computers, digital cameras and projectors.

As they were doing this project they learned how the Sunday School needed help with their children’s ministry and children at the church and the school needed clothing, especially for the winter.

Children’s Christian crafts are sent each year for the Sunday School and the Vacation Bible School, along with teaching materials. The Sunday School has grown from one small classroom to four classrooms and the VBS has grown to over 100 children.

Multiple shipments of children’s and young adult clothing are made throughout the year.

In the spring of 2014, Love for Latvia partnered with the Latvian Lutheran Church in Lakewood Colorado to raise funds for “Happy Feet”. “Happy Feet” was a program providing shoes and socks to children in the Kurzeme region of Latvia. Talsi is in this region and received shoes and socks from the $4,200 raised through an evening of Latvian food and entertainment.

In 2015, a special project was created to replace the windows in the sanctuary. The project required $11,000 to replace 16 windows in the sanctuary. The windows were nearly 80 years old and the church was cold in the winter and hot in the summer. They were afraid to open the windows in the summer for fear they would crumble.
