Frank Tillapaugh – Jobs for Guatemala – Quetzaltenango
Quetzaltenango is the second largest city in one of the poorest countries in the western hemisphere. Much of the population is Mayan, and many of them barely speak Spanish, so jobs for them are scarce.
Jobs for Guatemala collects used prom and bridesmaid dresses as donations and ships them by the boxful to Guatemala. These dresses are then used by young women who are trained to alter them to fit the diminutive Guatemalans. Then the dresses are sold in The Party Girl Dress Shop, which sells them to middle-class families with daughters who are celebrating Quinceanera celebrations. These events are similar to debutante balls.
The Party Girl Dress Shop struggles to keep the inventory needed to create the dresses, however, sales are not an issue! Shipping is our only cost of goods sold, and this cost is multiplied when dresses are sold.
All of the funds raised through Servants of Christ International offset shipping costs to send donated materials to the workers in Guatemala.
The principal entrepreneur is Frank Tillapaugh, who has a proven track record of starting and expanding creative outreach ministries. Frank and his wife Dora are self-supported through a Spanish Language School.
